Processing

Technical Services processes items to identify them, enable circulation and organization, and to allow to protect items from wear.

Every item recieves a barcode to identify it for circulation and inventory. All items are marked in some way to identify the library as owner: either with a stamp or with a pen. Sometimes the vendor provides some of this processing.

For all items, the funding pie-chart sticker is placed on the item in the most prominent place where it won't cover important artwork or text. This is usually done by cataloging staff. When an item is a special dedication, it may receive a special "in memory of" plate, to be given the same placement.

For all items except paperbacks and music CDs, a temporary "NEW" sticker is applied to them after they are processed and before they go out to patrons. The date is written on the sticker, for example 10/06 for October 2006.

Processing for specific kinds of items:

Hardcover Books with Dust Jackets

Hardcover books receive a barcode on the upper right (spine side) corner of the back.

They receive a title label (the old pocket label) on the very first page of the book (not the title page), or elsewhere if that would block art. They are stamped with the library's name on either the title page or the top of the top pages of the book.

The spine label is placed on the lower spine, except for Childrens "Easy" books ("E", "E-R" etc.), where the spine label goes on the top left (spine side) of the front of the book.

For other items where there isn't space for the label on the spine, it goes on the bottom left (spine side) of the front cover). All dust jackets are covered with plastic dust jacket covers, which are affixed with the ribbed tape.

All labels (barcode and spine) must be covered with mylar strips, tape, or the dust jacket cover.

When hardcover books don't have dust jackets, the procedure is basically the same, apart from the fact that, in this case, mylar strips or tape must always be used to cover labels.

Softcover Or Paperback Books:

Paperback books are processed the same as hardcover, except that a strip of acid-free 4-inch clear tape is used to reinforce the spine and, at the same time, cover both the spine label and the barcode.

Audio Books:

Audio books are placed in proper cases (plastic cases with sleeves for art), if they are not already packaged that way. The artwork is cut and taped as needed to fit into the case's sleeve. The spine label is applied to the spine part of the artwork. The library name and the barcode number are applied to each piece of the audio book (each CD or cassette) with a stamp or pen as possible/appropriate. Any extra piece-holders in the case are covered with a place cover indicating the piece was intentionally left black. (For example: Using a 10-cassette case for a 9-cassette talking book)

Music CDs:

For music CDs, the existing case is usually used. The barcode is applied on the upper right (spine side) corner of the back, and covered with a mylar strip, or by the case. The spine label is placed on the art in the upper left corner of the front. A sticker is applied to the front of the art to indicate the item cannot be returned in the book drop. On the disc or discs themselves, the barcode is written (or the extra number strip that comes with the barcode on the sheet is used) as well as the library name.

DVDs:

For DVDs, the existing case is usually used. The barcode is applied on the upper right (spine side) corner of the back art. The spine is applied to the bottom spine part of the art. A sticker is applied to the front of the art to indicate the item cannot be returned in the book drop. On the disc or discs themselves, the barcode is written (or the extra number strip that comes with the barcode on the sheet is used) as well as the library name.

Book/Audio kits:

For book/audio kits, the parts (books, cassettes, CDs etc.) are processed as they would normally be. Where there are multiple, unconnected parts, however, they are placed in a hanging bag, and extra spine labels are placed on both sides of the top front of the bag, and covered with mylar strips or tape.
