Shifting Parts of Library - Reusing the Space - Department Relocation
- Discharge in back
- Remove a window from workroom for returns - place bin under window and remove that part of the desk
- Short desk at front or two: first [one] charging?
- Move Circ desk to DVD/Video in Children's area
- Move holds to public space
- Cut a hole or trap door into book drop (inside [of piece of furniture]) to access fallen books
- Move Information Station to current drop box location
- Interlibrary loan: narrower work service below shelving; good step stool; for accessing empty containers stored above
- Shelving for ILL materials
- Keep ILL functions together: tables, desk, postage meter, etc.
- Move ILL to public services after moving Kathy and Erin to Wyoming Room
- Use Paul's office for Teen office
- Use the public services office as a second meeting room
- Move public service office to break room
- Move Susan and Paul to basement. Use Susan's office for discharging materials.
- Keep Pub Services staff offices together
- Put offices in Wyoming Room
- Dept staff closer to departments (ex: Children's office near childrens or teen office near teen collections)
- Use break room for office space and move break room downstairs
- Separate area for Children's programming
- Multi Media area for miscellaneous departments
- Like multimedia area
- Move the browsing area back to where the big windows are, to use the better light, the view, encourage more use of the area
- Browsing area in front of windows in current (teen) area
- [more] storage space
- A separate mail room w/ boxes for all staff
- Coffee shop!
- More modern furniture
- Move stained glass to lobby
- Bring some tables upstairs
- Use space in between columns
- Larger maintenance area
- As much open space as possible (now too dark and crowded)
- Carpet entire building using same color to eliminate divisions for future moves
- Make library look better
- Have an efficiency expert look at our office and meeting space to optimize usage
Collection changes
- Move Children's to adult area
- Children's area in SW corner with glass wall (soundproofing)
- Move adult to Teen and existing adult on north side
- Put adult ref into nonfiction collection
- Move out Wyoming Room to adult nonfiction
- Children's nonfiction around perimeter of Children's area
- Move Wyoming Room to Heritage Center
- Move materials from Wyoming Room to American Heritage Center
- Find ways to store "to be shelved" other than multiple carts in public view
- Move paperbacks to adult fiction
- Get rid of folios and instead have an oversize collection
- Incorporate "odd" items more fluidly into collection, i.e.: maps, plans, paperbacks
- Magazines and newspapers in browsing area
Signage, Artwork and Decorations Updated
- Big outdoor sign!
- Create displays at end of shelves to aid in finding stuff and promote more books
- Signage: look at other institutions to help determine what works well (hospitals)
- Fewer, more effective signs
- Lesser, bigger and more uniform signage
- Uniform signage
- Board above circ desk to display announcements
- Rearrange artwork according to the area of topic in the library, i.e.: Wyoming history, quilts, gardening, etc.
- Artwork vs. posters on ends of shelves
- Take down so many posters, artwork, etc.
- More and different posters (celebrity) around!
- Gallery for art displays near lobby
- Can we solicit current artwork on loan to replace (even temporarily) pieces that have been up since the 80s?
Cleaning, Decluttering, and Organizing / Routine Tasks
- Every staff member should have a shelf reading assignment, to address weekly
- Everyone should have a section to shelfread
- I think we should establish a citizen advisory panel made up of member of the public to solicit ideas
- Storage needs to be sensible and organized: all office supplies together in space easy to access, custodial supplies, maintenance supplies, things to keep but not needed now, things to be sold
- Weed collections
- Throw more away
- More new items = more weeding
- All staff need to participate in throwing out: one man's trash is another's treasure; inventory
- Clean staff room
- Clean out basement and AV - consolidate into one space
- Clean up/organize map area
- Not so much clutter - let's organize
- Find better space or eliminate so many pamphlets, brochures, maps, posters, ads, etc. - Maybe one wall for everything
- Less "flyers" all around the library - put them in one area and all holders of flyers in same type of holder
Improve Shelving
- Newspaper "tree" - no hanging papers; free up space
- No newspaper racks
- DVDs need better shelving
- Remove spinny racks
- How to use spinney racks? DVDs??
- No books on top or bottom shelves
- Lower book shelves with backing
- Shorter shelves
- Empty a set of shelving for ILL/holds
- Folios are too low! Need better position!
- We should get different magazine shelves
- More slanted or special purpose (like paperback) shelving
Lighting
- Continue to keep light from windows by placing low shelves in front of them – or seating
- Improve lighting
- Better lights for book sale area (Jennie P will pay)
- Better lighting as [you] enter library
- Skylights
Improving Public Access Computers
- More space efficient computer areas
- Purchase laptop computers for public use
- More space for individual laptop outlets
- Public copier and printer both near public computers
- Make computers private but get rid of study carrels
- Computers against a wall
- Grants for public printers?
- Computer lab with a staff person to monitor and/or give individual help
- Computer lab for all computers
- Computer for adults in children's area where wall between Teen and Children currently
