READ AND RETURNS

Page history last edited by PBworks 15 years, 2 months ago

1.  First of all, what IS a read and return?

How to Identify Types of Books
ACPL STAMP? READ AND RETURN STICKER? THIS BOOK IS...
No No ...a donation, and it goes on the donation cart by the elevator.
Yes No ...a romance novel, and it goes on the shelf underneath the ILLs.
Sometimes Yes ...a read and return, and it goes in the box on the shelf in the circulation workroom.

2.  Where do I get more books for read and return?

They are located in the basement by the old newspapers.  You can ask Kathy where to get more. Please sort through these books and select newer/classic books for our read and return collection.  Older/cruddy books can go on the ARK discard shelves.

3.  What do I need to do to get books ready?

First you need to get the books ready, which means printing stickers.  To do this, go to public --> circulation --> master forms --> read and return --> readandreturn.doc (35kb).  Print using the printer in the circulation workroom.  You will need to use the manual feed try to load labels (found in top of leftmost cabinet above printer) face up for printing.  When preparing to print the labels, be sure to go in and select manual feed, and ignore the message about a margin error.  Each book gets a sticker.  Try not to cover up the title, author name, or picture too much if possible.

4.  Where do the books go?

There is a place for read and returns in the lobby here at ACPL, and there are also several locations that take read and return books around the county.

             Lobby -

stock the rack as often as possible, filling all but the bottom two rows.  Shift older items to the top of the rack and fill in the lower rows. Record the date and how many books you put out on the appropriate sheet in the black binder.

Elsewhere -

there are boxes in the hallway outside of Betsy's office labeled with locations.  Look on the side of the box to see if the indicator card says "ready" or "returned."  If it says "ready," you don't need to do anything.  If it says "returned," you need to find out how many books should be in the box (look at the first sheet in the black binder), refill the box, and change the indicator card to "ready".  Record the date and the number of books you put in each box on the appropriate page in the black binder.  Volunteers distribute these books and they will pick them up/return them at will.

Return the used books to the Read and Return area in the basement.  If books are returned in poor condition, discard them appropriately.

5.  Statistics.

At the end of the month Stephen will ask you for statistics.  You can simply fill out a statistics sheet.  There are some in the back pocket of the black binder.  More can be found at public --> circulation --> master forms --> read and return --> read & return total cards.doc (23kb).
