CATALOGER
SPECIALIST I
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: The Cataloger is responsible for cataloging all materials that become part of the library’s collection and performing other tasks associated with the Technical Services and Systems Department. The Cataloger reports to the Technical Services and Systems Librarian.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE POSITION: The Cataloger performs cataloging tasks and database maintenance, using applicable cataloging standards, including MARC format, Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, Dewey Decimal Classification, and Library of Congress Subject Headings. Works within the Wyoming Libraries Database (WYLD), a union catalog for libraries in the state of Wyoming.
SPECIFIC EXAMPLES OF WORK:
- Adds library holdings information to records in WYLD database, including call number and item-level information, as per library practices.
- Checks in, processes, and distributes new periodicals, and performs other serials duties as needed.
- Searches and imports records to the WYLD database from outside sources, including LC & OCLC.
- Creates original records in the database as needed.
- Ensures that all records used by the library conform to applicable standards for accuracy, completeness, access and formatting, editing records as needed.
- Performs retrospective edits and corrections to the database as needed.
- Withdraws materials from the collection and database.
- Performs acquisitions duties as needed.
- Processes items as needed.
- Updates weekly and monthly loose-leaf and reference materials. .
- Mends library materials as needed.
- Maintains current skills in areas of work, including staying current in WYLD skills checklists for:
- Trains and supervises other staff and volunteers to provide assistance in cataloging.
- Other duties as assigned.
EXAMPLES OF GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

- Knows and follows safety procedures, pointing out problems and keeping equipment in satisfactory condition.
- Keeps informed on library issues: attends staff meetings, reads and initials the log, keeps up with e-mail.
- Keeps skills current and growing: attends required trainings, actively seeks opportunities to learn new things.

- Works well with others, including patrons, volunteers, and fellow staff.
- Is flexible, has a good sense of humor about the irritations of daily work life, and respects the feelings and needs of co- workers.
- Understands that change and evolving library procedures are constants in library work.
- Is sensitive to patron privacy and intellectual freedom issues.
- Is committed to public service values: is patient and helpful with all patrons and staff; values patron satisfaction above library rules.
- Is a good office citizen: submits timecard weekly, keeps work and break area clean, responds to emails and requests promptly, has a positive attitude.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: High school graduate or equivalent. Able to perform complex operations on a computer in a Windows environment. Prior clerical experience. Good memory and eye for detail. Ability to perform routine, repetitive tasks accurately.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Some college helpful. Two to three years of library experience is preferred. SIRSI Unicorn system experience helpful. Completion of cataloging and classification class in library science, with knowledge of standards including MARC format, Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, Dewey Decimal Classification, and Library of Congress Subject Headings supplemented by periodic workshops desirable.
POSITION CLASSIFICATION: Specialist I
VACATION: Up to a maximum of 30 days
SICK LEAVE: Up to a maximum of 60 days
RETIREMENT: Wyoming Retirement System. Individual contributes 5.57% and employer 5.68%
HOLIDAYS: Up to eleven a year depending on schedule
HEALTH INSURANCE: Employer pays for a Blue Cross/Blue Shield group plan
