MISSION

Programming in the children's department serves multiple purposes: to introduce books and reading, to encourage and promote library use, to introduce the library and its many services to the community. Inhouse programming includes storytimes and special programs; Outreach includes storytime visits to locations outside the library, and special events and programs.

The Outreach Coordinator handles promoting events.

As always, those needing auxiliary aids for effective communication in programs or services at the ACPL are welcome to make their needs and preferences known before the program. Please call 721-2580 (MD extension) for more information.

SummerReadingPlanning begins in January, if not earlier.

Fall - Spring storytime planning begins in August.

Cupboards in the children's office are used for collecting materials for storytimes.

LOCATION

Most Storytimes are held in the Large Meeting Room. Some storytimes are held in the Jean S. Carroll Room, and also in the Children's Room. All rooms must be reserved well in advance in the Happy Jack calendar.

EQUIPMENT

(CLOSET 1)AV Closet has been remodeled as the Children's Storytime Supply Closet (CSSC). Supplies for storytimes include all types of arts & crafts supplies, a flannelboard and easel, and puppets. Also in the CSSC is the remote control to lower & raise the movie screen, the sound system for movies, the multi-media projector.

(CLOSET 2)TV/VCR with stands are in the chair storage closet in the large meeting room.

(CLOSET 3)The DVD player is in the Adult Services/YA Closet in the Carroll Room. Tables are stacked in the Carroll Room.

(CLOSETS 4 & 5) A refrigerator and stove are in the vented closets in the Carroll Room.

Also in the large meeting room, there are 3 brown tables with "short legs" that are specifically for use by children.

BASEMENT: Storage for costumes, bulk craft supplies, Ellison Die machine & die cuts.

STORYTIMES

Family Storytimes provide young children and their caregivers a pleasant introduction to books and the library. For most programs, registration is not required nor is there a limit to the number of children and caregivers admitted. Part of our mission is to model sharing children's literature with parents and caregivers.

Scheduling for daycares and preschools takes place in August and is adjusted in January. Most preschools visit the library. On some occasions library staff will visit preschools, but we prefer to arrange the storytime experience in the library environment. A list of daycares/preschools and their contacts is in the children's office.

PLANNING

Children's Assistants plan storytime in advance. They select themes and consider which books to read, which songs and fingerplays to use, and what crafts will enhance the storytimes.
